Notes:
The 1866 lighthouse in this location was destroyed in 1881. The light had been rendered useless by the closing of New Inlet, which had been opened by a hurricane in 1761.

Earlier Towers?
1817: 40-foot, white brick tower with wooden shingles, destroyed by fire 1836. 1837: 30-foot white brick tower with brick dwelling, destroyed in Civil War in 1863. 1866: Octagonal tower on top of white, two-story wood frame dwelling on piles.

Date Established: 1817

Date Deactivated: 1879

Current Use: Destroyed.
