The Port Austin Reef Lighthouse Association has announced that they have been awarded a $480,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation toward a $610,000 exterior restoration project.
The group has been working for five years to secure this grant on the 1899 lighthouse that sits in Lake Huron near Port Austin, Michigan. In 1984, the lighthouse was scheduled for demolition but it was saved through the efforts of local resident Louis Schillinger, who has been working to fully restore the lighthouse since then. Mr. Schillinger said, “I was 35 when work started, I’m 72 now. I would like to turn it over to a new generation when it’s complete.”
