The first Port Austin Reef Lighthouse was an open skeletal tower that was lighted for the first time on September 15, 1878. Built at a cost of $80,923, its first keeper was lighthouse veteran Charles Kimball who served there until 1883, when he was transferred to become head keeper of the Whitefish Point Lighthouse. This skeletal tower was replaced in 1900 by the current structure that stands there today. (Lighthouse Digest archives) Back to the edition of: Sep/Oct 2022
