Date Established: 1872 Date Present Tower Built: 1872 Date Automated: 1961 Optics: 1872: Fifth order Fresnel lens; 1916: New fifth order Fresnel lens; now Vega VRB-25, solar powered. Fog Signal: 1902: Fog bell and striking mechanism in pyramidal tower; now automated horn with one blast every 30 seconds. Current Use: Active aid to navigation. Open To Public? Grounds only. Directions: Wood End Light can be reached by walking across a breakwater at the west end of Commercial Street. The walk is fairly strenuous and the breakwater is exposed to waves and spray in rough weather. You can also take a water shuttle to Long Point -- call Flyer's at (508) 487-0898 or (800) 750-0898.
