Notes: This is the tallest land-based lighthouse in Britain. The original 1789 lighthouse on North Ronaldsay is also still standing. The North Ronaldsay Trust bought the keepers’ cottages and associated buildings in 2003, and they will be used for tourist accommodations and workshops for local businesses. Tower Height: 138 Height of Focal Plane: 141 Characteristic and Range: Flashing white every 10 seconds, visible for 19 nautical miles. Description of Tower: Conical red brick tower with two white bands.

Date Established: 1789 Date Present Tower Built: 1854 Date Automated: 1998 Fog Signal: Discontinued (was one blast every 60 seconds). Current Use: Active aid to navigation. Open To Public? Yes. Museum? This is the only lighthouse in Orkney with guided tours for visitors. Tours are available on Sundays in summer and by arrangement.
