The United States Coast Guard has declared the Watch Hill Lighthouse in Westerly, Rhode Island as excess property. This means that, under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, the General Services Administration can transfer ownership to any qualified nonprofit or other government entity.
It is highly likely that the nonprofit Watch Hill Lighthouse Keepers Association, who has leased the lighthouse since August 31, 1986, will apply for ownership. However, the State of Rhode Island, or perhaps the town of Westerly, may apply for ownership and then lease the lighthouse back to the nonprofit.
