President George H. W. Bush is shown here addressing the 200 plus attendees at the Maine Lighthouse Conference on June 16, 1997 at the MBNA Conference Center in Lincolnville, Maine. The event was the official kick-off for the Maine Lights Program, which was the brainchild of Peter Ralston of the Maine Island Institute and the forerunner of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act.

Mr. Bush told the audience, “You are helping to keep these lighthouses burning into the next century. You are doing better with actions than I possibly can with words.” The former president went on to say that we have now entered into “a new era of care-taking and preservation . . . and the possibilities can be made into realities.”

The former president said that he was not going to offer advice to the crowd on how to save the lighthouses, but he did say “lighthouses are a living legacy that must be saved.” He also said that “Maine is leading the nation, if not the world, in saving lighthouses and I salute you.”

We salute former President George H. W. Bush and are thankful for his years of service to our nation.

May he Rest in Peace.
