The lighthouse, built in 1874, in the eastern Straits of Mackinac offshore from Cheboygan, has been purchased by Nick Korstad and his mother Cindy Korstad. They don’t know yet what they will do with the lighthouse, but Nick Korstad is no stranger to lighthouse restoration and preservation. In 2010 Nick Korstad purchased the 1881 Borden Flats Lighthouse in Fall River, Massachusetts and has since beautifully restored the lighthouse and made it available for overnight stays.

When the Spectacle Reef Lighthouse was originally built, it took 200 men four years to construct the structure. As you can see in the photos, which were recently taken by the General Services Administration, Nick Korstad will have his work cut out for him. He says that this coming spring his first project will be to paint the lantern, the railings, and the attached fog signal building.
