The New London Harbor Lighthouse in New London, Connecticut has undergone some restoration work thanks to its owners, The New London Maritime Society, who gained ownership of the lighthouse in 2009 under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act.
The 89-foot tall tower was built in 1801 to replace an earlier tower that had been built in 1761. The keeper’s house has been privately owned since 1912 when the lighthouse was automated. Because of the private property, the lighthouse is not open to the public, except by special arrangement.
After the scaffolding went up, the tower was shrouded in black sheathing as the restoration work took place. Then the black sheathing was removed.
