White Shoal Lighthouse, west of the Straits of Mackinac in Lake Michigan was built in 1910 to replace a lightships that had been stationed there since 1891. Its red and white “barber pole” design is unique to American lighthouses. The 2nd order Fresnel lens that was once in the tower is now on display at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point Lighthouse. (Photo by Tony Connaghan.)
