As we all complained about this past winter, let’s take a look back to 1899 at the U. S. Life Saving Station at Brant Rock, Massachusetts. The life-saving crew took some time to pose for this photo that was used on a post card that placed these heroes into the pages of eternity. They certainly had their share of ice and snow to deal with. To place this photo in a time-perspective, 1899 was the year that the Spanish-American War officially ended with the signing of a peace treaty, and when hostilities broke out in Manila; it was also the beginning of the Philippine-America War, a conflict that very few Americans know about. The year of 1899 was also the year that the name Bayer was approved as a registered trademark for aspirin.
The U. S. Life Saving Service was a sister organization to the U.S. Lighthouse Service. In 1915 the U. S. Life Saving Service and the Revenue Marine Service were merged to create the United States Coast Guard.
