The next time you look at your loose change you might see the new quarter that features Maine’s Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse.
The new quarter, part of the “America the Beautiful Quarters Program” that honors America’s National Parks, was released on June 26 at a ceremony held at the Hull Cove Visitors Center at Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine.
The pouring down rain did not dampen the spirits of those who attended the unveiling and dedication ceremony of the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse quarter that was used to depict one of the most beautiful locations of Acadia National Park.
Our very own Tim Harrison, editor of Lighthouse Digest, was the primary speaker at the event. Harrison spoke about the history of Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse and the important role of lighthouses in American history.
The Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse quarter, honoring Acadia National Park, is the 13th quarter to be released in the U.S. Mint’s American the Beautiful Series of quarters. It is the second traditional lighthouse to appear on United States money. The first lighthouse to appear on United States money was also a Maine Lighthouse. In 2003, Maine’s Pemaquid Point Lighthouse appeared on a quarter as part of the U.S. Mint’s State Quarters Program. Tim Harrison, editor of Lighthouse Digest, was also a speaker at that ceremony.
Also speaking briefly at the event were representatives from Maine’s Congressional delegation and the Maine Governor’s office. The U.S. Mint was represented by B.B. Craig, Associate Director of Sales and Marketing for the mint.
