Although this may not look like your typical lighthouse, it is indeed a lighthouse. It is also one of North America's more modern beacons having been built by the Canadian government in 1953.
Located in Whitefish Bay at the entrance to the St. Mary's River in Lake Superior near Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the lighthouse was staffed at one time by three lighthouse keepers. It is often referred to as the Gros Cap Crib Lighthouse. Although it was not a family station, families of the keepers did come to visit.
By the late 1960's the station had electricity supplied by an underwater power cable and a helicopter pad was installed on top of the lighthouse. The station was automated in the 1980's and the lighthouse keepers were removed. Today, the automated lighthouse operates year 'round.
Even though it doesn't look like a lighthouse and is surrounded by water it looks like it offered cozy and warm living accommodations that today would make a great bed and breakfast. Personally, I'd love to spend the night there.
