Merridee Marcus of Los Angeles, California gave these photos of lighthouse keeper Benjamin Maddox and his wife Olivette. Keeper Maddox was Merridee’s great grandfather.

Benjamin Maddox (sometimes spelled Maddocks) was born in 1831. He left his home in Ellsworth, Maine to serve in Company C of the First Maine Heavy Artillery during the Civil War. He served as second assistant keeper at Maine’s Mt. Desert Rock Lighthouse from 1882 to 1888 and as head keeper at Maine’s Winter Harbor Lighthouse from 1888 to 1896.
