Lighthouse Island (Ode to Anclote Key)

By Jill Noblit MacGregor

Comments?

Lighthouse, lighthouse just beyond this weary shore,

The light in your eyes doesn't shine anymore.

How well I do remember when I was very young,

Your radiant beams like shafts of golden sun.

Lighthouse, lighthouse just beyond this weary shore,

Like a warrior at his post, you guard the gulf floor.

Your proud soldier frame and iron hinged hat,

'Neath your sturdy steel legs lies a green mangrove mat.

Lighthouse, lighthouse just beyond this weary shore,

The light in your eyes doesn't shine like before.

No longer overseer of the vessels on the bay,

Your glory and your splendor, like the tide, have ebbed away.

Lighthouse, lighthouse just beyond this weary shore,

Abandoned and forsaken, left for combers to explore.

At times I gaze upon you, in want of days gone by,

When boats were subject to you, and the light was in your eye.
