Thanks to the efforts of the United States Coast Guard, Massachusetts’ Borden Flats Lighthouse is again looking like new.
The caisson style lighthouse was built on a reef at the mouth of the Taunton River, which comprises part of the Fall River. The name Borden Flats was derived from the Borden Family, who owned extensive textile mills along the edge of the river and were one of the area’s wealthiest families. The Braga Bridge (Rt. 195) passes almost directly above the lighthouse and just beyond the bridge is the famous Battleship Cove, one of Massachusetts’ largest maritime attractions. Some early post cards referred to the structure as the Quequechan Lighthouse.
Coast Guard repairs included interior as well as exterior work to the tower.
