Grays Reef Lighthouse in Lake Michigan

The lighthouse looks quite different now from when U. S. Lighthouse Service keeper Louis Bauchan took this photo of the lighthouse in 1936, shortly after its completion. Below is the lighthouse today. Those who were able to take one of the cruises offered by the North American Lighthouse Festival this past August got to see this remote lighthouse, probably for the first time. Louis Bauchan, is one of the last surviving keepers of the old United States Lighthouse Service, which was dissolved in 1939. He will be on hand at the Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival to share his memories and photographs of his days as a lighthouse keeper. The Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival will be held Oct 13-14 in Alpena, Michigan.
