The bell was tolled as the names of the dead crewmen were read. This is the original bell from the Vineyard Lightship. It was raised from the wreck of the vessel by divers. The bell was struck a total of 18 times, 12 strikes for the crew of the LV 73, seven strikes for the lost crew of the LV 117 Nantucket lost in 1934, and one strike for all other lightship crewmen lost at sea. The ceremonial mallet was constructed by Harold Flagg, the sole surviving member of the crew of the Vineyard Lightship. Back to the edition of: November 1999
