Photo Caption:

The Fir was the last active American Lighthouse Tender, built by the U.S. Lighthouse Service. It became the property of the U.S. Coast Guard when the Lighthouse Service was dissolved in 1939. According to a report issued by Ralph Shanks in 1992, at the time of its decommissioning in 1991, the Fir was the last surviving unaltered American lighthouse tender and the last working member of the U.S. Lighthouse Service fleet.
