In the late 1800's it was decided that the Belle Tout Lighthouse, then 70 feet from the edge of the cliff, was to be discontinued. The new Beachy Head Lighthouse, on the beach below was lit in 1902. The new white chalk on the beach below is from a cliff collapse which happened a couple of days before this photo was taken. Several thousand tons of chalk, the largest fall ever known here, broke away from the top of the cliffs. The cracks show the next section ready to break away and smash 350 feet, to the beach below.
