Cape Agulhas Lighthouse is situated on the most southerly cape on the continent of Africa. It was named by the Portuguese as the "Cape of Needle", the reference to the needle being the compass needle which behaved strangely when their ships rounded this cape. More ships have been wrecked here than any other part of the coast of South Africa. The lighthouse, at one time deactivated, is now open as a museum.
