Although the year is unknown when this early photo of Sandy Hook Lighthouse was taken, if you look closely at the lower left hand corner, you will notice the chicken coop that was depicted in the 1879 edition of Scribner’s Monthly. You will also note a large amount of lumber and window frames also in the lower left side of the photo, which might indicate that this photo was taken in 1883 when the new keeper’s house was built. A person on the outer walkway of the lantern room appears to have a tripod, perhaps for surveying equipment or a telescope. There is also a person standing next to the tower.
