Burnt Coat Harbor Lighthouse as it appeared in 1967 when it was still a staffed station. Roscoe Chandler was stationed here from 1931 to 1953. His family was able to live here with him until the outbreak of World War II. This image shows when the enclosed walkway between the house and the tower was still in place, which was removed just prior to automation in 1975 when the station was closed up and left abandoned to the elements. In 1994, ownership of the lighthouse was awarded to the Town of Swans Island. The lighthouse is now being restored and cared for by the Friends of Swan’s Island Lighthouse.
