In 1935 when electricity arrived at Burnt Coat Harbor Lighthouse, it was no longer necessary to have a fog bell operated by weights and pulleys. The Chandler family helped the workmen remove the weights and pulleys, and then they permanently removed the top half of the tower. What would remain was the most unusual looking bell tower in all of Maine. (Lighthouse Digest archives, Joseph Kelly collection.)
