Photo Caption:

A stone fog bell tower was built at Pooles Island Lighthouse in 1828 that held a 30-inch diameter bell that was 26-inches high and weighed over 1,000 pounds. Probably because of erosion, the stone bell tower was replaced in 1879 by the wooden fog bell tower that is shown here. It is not known when the wooden fog bell tower was taken down or what happened to the bell. Could it still on the island, buried somewhere?
