Gray’s Reef Lighthouse as it appeared shortly after construction was completed in 1936 from a photograph taken Louis Bauchan from the deck of the U.S. Lighthouse Service Tender Sumac. The large structure on the platform of the crib was the construction crew’s quarters. For many years, Louis Bauchan, who died at the age of 91 on April 20, 2003, was a fixture at the Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival in Alpena, Michigan where he would share his memories and photos of life at St. Martins Island, Poverty Island, Chicago Harbor, and Pointe Betsie lighthouses.
