On August 8, 1998 the United States Coast Guard launched and christened the Coast Guard Cutter Joshua Appleby (WLM556) to honor the memory of the Sand Key Lighthouse keeper who, along with his daughter, grandson, and two other people, lost his life on October 11, 1846 when a hurricane washed away the keeper’s quarters at the lighthouse.
