Florida’s Sombrero Key Lighthouse, located south of Marathon Bay, at 160 feet in height, is the tallest of Florida’s reef lighthouses. Built in 1858, the lighthouse was automated in 1963. You can learn more about the Sombrero Key Lighthouse in the story, “Sauna-like Living Conditions at Sombrero Key Kept Tensions High” written by Richard “Dick” Clayton and appeared in the November, 2009 edition of Lighthouse Digest. That story can also be found in the on-line archives at www.LighthouseDigest.com. (Photo courtesy of Bob and Sandra Shanklin, “The Lighthouse People.”
