Shown standing by the base of the newly reinforced buttresses at the base of Devils Island Lighthouse in this early 1900s image are Clarence Chape and Mary Brown with some friends from nearby Bayfield on the mainland on a weekend outing to the lighthouse. The lighthouse must have sparked love between Clarence and Mary as they got married shortly after that. Interestingly, in the 1970s when Pete Jones was assigned as the Officer-In-Charge of the Bayfield Coast Guard Station, he met his soon to be wife, Diane Chape, granddaughter of Clarence and Mary.
