A moveable scaffold was used to facilitate restoration of the tower’s exterior. Originally, the structure was built of brick, but in 1914 a more durable 3 ½ inch coating of concrete was added to the façade. While the concrete does provide an effective barrier to the natural elements, it requires restoration work every 15-20 years. Back to the edition of: Sep/Oct 2013
