First Day of Issue postmarked envelopes are extremely popular with stamp collectors and lighthouse aficionados. Strangely, the U.S. Postal Service chose the City of Portland for its official First Day of Issue postmark, rather than the Town of Cape Elizabeth, Maine where the Portland Head Lighthouse is actually located.
