James Webb Cook Hayes, known as Webb Hayes (1856 -1934), second son of President Rutherford B Hayes, was one of the notable people onboard the Lighthouse Service tender Iris after the USRC Grant incident in 1877. His godfather was close family friend General George Crook. In December of 1902 he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery in the Philippine-American War of 1899. Later, he and three others founded the National Carbon Corporation that evolved into Union Carbide Corporation. Back to the edition of: May/Jun 2013
