Captain John G. Walker (1835-1907) who was Secretary of the United States Light-House Board from 1873 to 1878 was one of those onboard the Lighthouse Service tender Iris after the Grant incident. He also served as the Chief of the U.S. Bureau of Navigation, which was later merged into the Coast Guard. As a Rear Admiral, in 1896 he was appointed Chairman of the United States Light-House Board. The New York Times accused him of abuse of power, but nothing ever became of it. He died while vacationing in Ogunquit, Maine. Back to the edition of: May/Jun 2013
