Just a second or two remained before the final demise of the historic Shinnecock Bay Lighthouse. Just three years earlier, in 1945, thinking that the battle had been won to save the lighthouse from destruction, the Hampton Bays Board of Trade and Village Improvement Society published a half page promotion that featured the lighthouse with the following caption, “It stands today upon a solid foundation like our faith in our country, America.” But, in the end, the Coast Guard, claiming the tower was unsafe, had its way. Their destruction of the lighthouse shook the core of the community as much as it shook the earth when the lighthouse came down in a crash that could be heard for three miles. The painful memories remain in the hearts and minds of many to this day. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
