Photo Caption:
Andrew John Nowland, in his United States Lighthouse Service uniform, posed for this photo onboard the lighthouse tender Hyacinth. He was promoted to Quartermaster on October 14, 1924, perhaps when this photo was taken. In 1939 the Lighthouse Service was dissolved and its duties were taken over by the United States Coast Guard. The Coast Guard continued the rank of Quartermaster until the summer of 2003, when the rank was combined with that of a Boatswains Mate. Back to the edition of: Sep/Oct 2012
