A twist of fate may have saved the Tayloe home in Washington, North Carolina. It was here that Dr. Tayloe I married Mary Elizabeth Grist in November 1856 before the outbreak of the Civil War. In that happier time the wedding was a major event and guests were served the first ice cream ever enjoyed in Washington. During the Civil War the beautiful two-story home named Elmwood was picked by Union doctors to become a hospital during Federal occupation of the town and was thus spared when much of the rest of the town was burned by Union troops.
