Photo Caption:

This 1883 photo of Wisconsin’s Pottawatomie Lighthouse shows just how far the privy was away from the lighthouse. This would have a been a long walk on a cold winter’s night. Fortunately, that’s where bed pans came in handy. The lighthouse, also known as Rock Island Lighthouse, was the first federal lighthouse station to be established in Wisconsin. It is located at the mouth of the Green Bay on Lake Michigan.
