This construction photo of the second Umpqua River Lighthouse was taken in 1892. Notice the empty lantern at the top. Rasmus Petersen was supposed to be the head keeper of the new light in January of 1893, but en route on the transfer, he was informed that the light wasn’t ready yet and his orders to go there were “revoked so I had to return to the Rock again and assume charge until further notice.” It would be another year and a half before Rasmus finally was reassigned to Willapa Bay Lighthouse in Washington.
