When the six ladies and Charlotte Petersen visited Tillamook Rock Lighthouse during the summer of 1893, this is the way they would have been brought onto the Rock – in a small, wooden, box-like crate, or “cage” as Rasmus called it, hoisted from the tender’s whaleboat by the derrick over to the landing platform. It would have been a strange sight to see those women, wearing their period dresses probably with hats, flying through the air and holding on for dear life! (Coast Guard Historian’s Office)
