Reaching the Fort Point Light Station fog bell was in itself dangerous duty. The keeper had to climb down a ladder from the seaward side of the fort to service the bell. On September 30, 1904, the fog bell was replaced by a Daboll trumpet that operated from a building that sat on top of the fort about 85 feet from the light tower. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
