On the same day that Russell Lane led the 1958 rescue off Whitehead Island Lighthouse, Weston Gamage, who was the Office-in-Charge of the Fletchers Neck Life Boat Station, down the coast in Biddeford Pool, Maine, also led a rescue of a disabled 27-foot sloop with two men on board, six miles off the coast of the station. Weston Gamage had previously been a lighthouse keeper at the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, and from 1961 to 1962 he was the Officer-in-Charge (keeper) of Portland Head Lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. During his long Coast Guard career he also served at the Merrimack River and Plum Island Life Boat Stations, both in Massachusetts. (Dave Gamage collection, Lighthouse Digest archives)
