Adriel Bird (r) is handing off the gavel to Donald Higgins in 1938 after serving for a year as president of the Bowdoin College Alumni Council, which he had been a member of since 1935. The Bird family fortune was founded on a wholesale grocery company in Rockland, along with the Atlantic Spice Company. Adriel’s holdings included the Samoset Hotel Breakwater, La Touraine Coffee, and Kennedy & Company stores. He additionally served as a district lawyer in Washington, D.C.
