Samuel Longley Bickford was born in Sanford, Maine on July 30, 1885. He married Mary Haddigan on January 10, 1910. They had one son, Harold, who also worked in the family food services business. Samuel began his restaurant career in 1902 and by 1920 acquired a chain of ten restaurants in New York City. In 1929, he merged with other entities to become Bickford’s Inc. He established the Bickford’s restaurants chain which eventually expanded from coast to coast. For many years, his restaurants and industrial food service were supplied by Adriel Bird’s La Touraine Coffee. While Bickford obviously had a great sense of humor as shown by his prankster persona, he was also known for being humble in his success, kind-hearted and generous. Samuel Bickford died on July 18, 1959 and is buried at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York. (Courtesy of Jeffrey S. Bickford)
