In 1895, Carl Leick had designed Oregon’s Willamette River Lighthouse sitting on pilings and only using a post lantern for a light. This plan was later revised in designing the 1901 Desdemona Sands Lighthouse to include a lantern room rising from the center of the octagonal structure’s roof. Washington’s Semiahmoo Harbor Lighthouse would use these same plans as is seen by the crossed-out title on this design page. None of the three lighthouses exist today. (National Archives)
