In 1918, Samuel Holbrook, age 26, tragically drowned off Libby Island Lighthouse in Maine when the station peapod overturned in view of his wife onshore. This was the second son that his parents, Keeper Elmer Holbook, and wife, Eunice, had lost at a lighthouse. Samuel’s brother, Ansel, had died at the age of 18 in 1903 on Matinicus Rock from a liver abscess because they were unable to summon transport for adequate medical attention in time.
