In 1935, keeper Albert H. Joost was severely burned when a can of gasoline at Southampton Shoal Lighthouse in California exploded. Albert’s wife, Evelyn, rowed him ashore to Fort McDowell personnel who then sent him on to the Marine Hospital in San Francisco. Keeper Joost succumbed to his wounds a couple of days later on Christmas Day. (Lighthouse Digest archives, Fanning Family Collection) Back to the edition of: May/Jun 2021
