In 1920, Henry C. Ray, 1st assistant keeper at Mt. Desert Rock Lighthouse in Maine, died in view of his wife while attempting a landing in the station peapod in heavy seas. His fellow assistant, Maurice R. Beal, almost drowned in the mishap as well, but was rescued on a ledge by keeper Harry E. Freeman, who also had witnessed the boat overturn from the shore.
