The Rochester Harbor East Pier Lighthouse was also known as the Charlotte-Genesee East Pier Lighthouse. During one storm when keeper George Codding was trying to get to the lighthouse to light the beacon, a wave washed him off the pier. Then another wave washed him back on the pier. Although he suffered a broken arm, he was lucky to have survived. Only one time in Codding’s long career was he unable to reach the lighthouse tower to light the beacon. Later when electricity was installed, Codding would light the light from shore. Back to the edition of: Jan/Feb 2011
