This interesting photo of Cape Romain Light Station’s “new” tower, taken in 1916 during the period of Engineer Dillon’s visits, shows the single vertical side that he wrote was caused from settling during its 1858 construction. Knowing it was built that way probably did not alleviate any keeper’s concern about the possibility of it eventually toppling over during a storm. (National Archives photo)
