Godfrey C. Kiff started his lighthouse career in the 1920s at Louisiana’s Ship Shoal Lighthouse in Louisiana. Located south of Grand Isle in the Gulf of Mexico, the lighthouse was completed in 1859. When this vintage image was taken, its Fresnel lens was still in the tower. The lighthouse was automated in 1929 and its keepers were removed. The lighthouse was briefly staffed as a lookout tower by Coast Guard personnel during World War II. The structure was permanently discontinued in 1965 and is now rusting away as a reminder of the ingenuity and dedication of those who came before us. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
